What are we doing behind the scenes at AAHC?

In addition to creating and maintaining this website and the AAHC social media, we are excited to be working on a variety of projects!

Events with AAHC

Schooling Opportunities

Cathy Micali has been working on setting up some english discipline schooling opportunities this summer – XC, Ride a Tests and jumper rounds. These events are designed to be low pressure events. Some events will have lessons that you can sign up with a trainer. To learn more, sign up for our newsletter, follow the AAHC Facebook page, or follow this link and bookmark the page as that is where we will be posting all the information and updates.

We see a huge opportunity for western events and trail ride meetups. If you want to chat with us about helping plan AAHC trail ride meet ups, barrel jackpots, or similar events, send us an email!

AAHC Local Trainer Showcase

This is a series designed to highlight all the amazing and fabulous trainers in the Athens Area… and to give us all a reason to get together and socialize.

From the attendee’s perspective, this is an opportunity to learn about local trainers. Depending on the trainers skill set, you may be able to watch the trainer train/work horses or watch them teach a few lessons. The fee to attend the event will vary from event to event but will be around $25/person.

Land Conservation and AAHC Youth Educational Program

Heritage Park

The AAHC team is working on a proposal to present to the Oconee County Board of Commissioners to improve this underutilized equestrian facility. Heritage Park is a facility in South Oconee (on Hwy 441 heading out of town) that has miles of trails, a STUNNING covered arena, and 30 stall barn with wash racks. There is plenty of parking and open space. The facility itself needs a few upgrades to make it safe and practical for the local community to use. Our suggestions will include updating the footing in the arena, adding a permanent fence around the arena, and adding a well. If you have any suggestions or want to help with the project, please reach out to us at athensareahorsecommunity@gmail.com.

Youth Program

Our mission here at AAHC is to encourage and support the growth of the local horse community. Bringing youth into horses is essential for sustaining our sport and the horse industry. This program is very much still in the planning phase but the goal is to start with offering unmounted educational opportunities to the under served areas of our community – bring horses (and ponies!) into the areas of Athens where people may have not met a horse in person. As a horse enthusiast, you know the value of horses. They can give us confidence in the same moment that they are teaching us humility. Horses improve communication and leadership skills. I could go on and on. We are working towards setting up our board for a 501c3 for the AAHC youth educational program. As always, the things we do here at AAHC depend on your support. If you have any ideas or want to get involved, please reach out to us.

And as a veeeerrryyy long term goal, we have dreams of hiring a lobbyist to help us communicate with our lawmakers.

  1. Hi Amanda,
It would be nice to see the facility at Heritage upgraded. It definitely could use a better surface and a fence. There is already a well and water available at the arena so I don’t think another well is needed. You will need to start by putting together a proposal with a budget. We are starting to organize a 501 c 3 foundation in support of Oconee Parks and Recreation. Once we get this off the ground, individuals will be able to donate in a tax deductible way to projects such as these. Of course, if you can get the county government to support it, that would be great.
